Racing South Africa The Vodacom Durban July has lost two of its brightest hopes, with the withdrawal of champion Elusive Fort and Mike de Kock’s E CAPE SIZZLING SUMMER CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE Long time competition leader, Paul Garlicki, has trainer, Alec laird, to thank for his share of the R25 000 first prize when Avontuur Cape Fillies Guineas third, Jet Trail, won a Novice Plate at the Vaal Racecourse on the last day of the Cape Charity Turf Challenge. In the process, Garlicki earned the 2 points required to join Saki Machaba at the top of the leader board and both entrants took home R12 500 in cash. Saki Machaba, a Pretoria-based consultant for Avis, is a keen racing enthusiast and punter who had entered last year’s KZN Charity Turf Challenge for the first time, ending up in about 40th position. Paul Garlicki, on the other hand runs Connemara Stud in the Western Cape with his wife, Lindi. Both players took multiple entries and crucially found at least two of the three winners of the all- important bonus point races. Interestingly, the winners finished 3rd and 4th as well. In a thrilling day’s racing, had the hugely popular selections, Sparkling Gem and Pocket Power, failed to make third place in the Majorca Stakes and J&B Met respectively, the outcome of the competition might have been very different. Both horses were a short head away from finishing in fourth position and thus earned 30 points between them. Pocket Power was the leading point scorer with 52 points ahead of Mother Russia and River Jetez who earned 49 and 45 points respectively. The competition’s stand alone J&B Met Day prize of R10 000 sponsored by kind courtesy of the Western Province Owners & Trainers Association, was shared between 4 entrants, “The Sherriff” getting it right with two entries and receiving R5000. The other winners with 111 points were Billy Steele and Graham Reid each earning R2500. The winners are requested to contact Rodney Dunn’s office on 021 762 3094. The Western Cape Equine Trust Horse Care Unit (NPO Number: 000-427) received R8 300 in support of their excellent work in caring for abused horses. The cheque was handed over to Aubrey Jacobs on J&B Met day by Peter Gibson and Rodney Dunn. Racing South Africa wishes to thank Rodney Dunn and his team at the Western Province Owners & Trainers Association for their support in promoting the inaugural staging of the Cape edition of the Charity Turf Challenge, Gold Circle for their continued IT and Audit contribution and the sponsors of the spot prizes offered along the way. These included: Arabella (wine), Avontuur (wine), Klawervlei (wine), L’Ormarins (wine), Betting World (betting vouchers), Dean Finder (betting vouchers), Sedley Barr (betting vouchers). Following consultation with the Racing Association, it has been decided to cancel the Gauteng leg of this year’s Charity Turf Challenge. Therefore, the last of the 2009/2010 series will be the KZN competition which kicks off with the running of the Gr.2 Drill Hall Stakes on 7 May 2010. Entry forms are expected to be published by Monday, 12 April. 01 February 2010 more...
